How does FASTag work?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India, operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It allows automated deduction of toll charges from a prepaid account linked to the FASTag, enabling cashless payments at toll plazas.

A FASTag is a sticker attached to your vehicle's windscreen. It has a unique identification number and an embedded radio frequency identification (RFID) chip that stores payment information. As your vehicle approaches a toll plaza, an overhead scanner reads the FASTag and deducts the applicable toll amount from the linked prepaid account. If the payment goes through, the toll booth barrier opens automatically.

The prepaid account has to be active and sufficiently funded for seamless transactions. You can monitor your FASTag account and recharge it through net banking, UPI, credit/debit cards, or cash payments at certain touchpoints. FASTag offers the benefits of reduced waiting times at toll plazas, fuel savings, and cashless convenience. It also enables you to digitally track toll spending, recharges, and payment history for each vehicle.
